THIS
MONTH: MEASURING FOR THE CORRECT SIZE
COATS:
Chest–
Measure around the fullest part of the chest keeping tape up
under arms and across the shoulder blades. Add two inches to
this measurement to get the coat size.
EXAMPLE: If your chest measurement comes out
to be 40 inches then the coat size is 40. See the size chart
below
SHIRTS:
Neck– Measure
around the neck until the tape is comfortably snug. Record
exact measurements including half sizes.
Sleeve–
Measure from the center of the collar at the back of the neck,
over the shoulder, the length of the arm to one inch beyond
the wrist bone.
TROUSERS:
Waist–
Measure around the waist directly over the shirt (not over
slacks or coat) just above the hip bones and over the naval.
Keep two fingers between the tape and your body. The number
of inches is the waist measurement.
Table of Proportional Measurements
The chart below will help you
in checking your measurements. Note that these are proportionate
sizes and lengths relative to height and weight, for the “average
built” man—and can be used as a reliable guide.
Exceptions, of course, are people with full chest, small waist,
extreme prominent seat, stouts or corpulents, etc. Note that
each size is in the same arrangement according to height and
weight and that many of the measurements change with each
height and weight. If you are between any two weights shown
on the chart, for a given height, the changes in chest measure
can be figured as follows: If you are 5’8” tall
and weigh 162 ½ lbs., your chest measure should be
midway between 38” for 155 lbs. and 40” for 170
lbs., or 39”.

EXAMPLE: If you are 5ft. 10in. tall and weigh
190 lbs., you should measure 42 in. around the chest. If you
get a 40 in. chest measurement, re-check your measure. Be sure
to get the tape high up under arms over largest part of blades
in back. Hold the tape sufficiently easy to slide your fingers
under it.
